The grapes Vinhão
A variety with major expansion, grown throughout the region for its quality and because it is the only red variety in the region.Produces wines of intense garnet red color, with a vinous aroma, evidenced in the berry aromas (blackberry and raspberry), with an equally vinous, full-bodied and slightly astringent taste.
The grape Vinhão is also grown across the border in Galicia, the northwestern corner of Spain, where it is known by the names Sousao, Souzao, Souson and various permutations of those forms.
As is standard for a Portuguese grape variety, Vinhão has a complex network of synonyms and grape varieties which may, or may not, be identical.
Synonyms include: Tinto Nacional, Tinto Antigo, Negrao, Negrao Pe de Perdiz, Espadeiro da Tinta, Espadeiro Basto, Espadeiro Preto, Tinto da Parada, Pinta Femea, Sousao, Souzao, Souson.
Vinhao's vineyard acreage is on the increase, and is spreading eastwards and inland towards the Douro (where it is called Sousao). Here, the variety's natural acidity and depth of color is making it an increasingly popular inclusion in Port. Any wine destined for fortification and/or extended aging requires good acid structure, and Vinhão offers not only this but also high potential alcohol.
